Forty-two-year-old soloist named Archer had a "Stephen Callahan" experience
and was rescued Thursday after 42 days in a life raft. Talking about "living
aboard". Like Callahan, Archer set sail by himself from the Canary Is., headed
for the Caribbean, and the 39-foot _Alchemy_ foundered at sea. He drifted
across the Atlantic and was spotted when he shot a parachute flare near a
passing cargo ship. Someone was actually looking out at sea and saw it. That
was a lucky break someone was actually on watch.
Still... I want to sail this same route in our little plywood dory. Who's with
me!!? I was reading yet another article lauding "these peculiarly seaworthy
craft", a New York Times article archived back in the days of sail 107 years
ago:

"...and it is also a fact that more men owe their lives to the seaworthy
qualities of this simple, slab-sided little craft than to any other small boat
in existence."
That does it; I'm going to deck over most of my cockpit and sail around the
Americas while on a survival diet and writing about it...
...might be best to go in multiple boats. Who's with me!!?

22-ft slab-sided St. Pierre dory balanced lug-rigged cat-ketch auxiliary
now lying in the desert
unloved for two months now
....whereas just last November she had two weekends on the water,
the first weekend of the two being a near knockdown in the Santa Ana winds that
were wreaking fiery havoc on So.Cali.
.....because I got complacent and left my main sheet cleated off in a fresh gale
(now at least I know she can go hard over UNBALLASTED and come right back
(and boy does her helm respond nicely when put down when over on her ear like
that))
....and the second trip was pure sailing and hiking perfection...
