May I suggest a different approach? First, get a below-deck autopilot.
They are much more robust than tiller pilots, and with the below-deck
a/p engaged you can tilt the tiller up and have much more cockpit room
than with a wheel.

Hand steering is hand steering, whether with tiller or wheel. If you
find it unusually wearisome, perhaps some attention to balancing the
boat would be of value. Sail trim can make all the difference in the
world in helm loads.

Finally, if you start with the below-deck a/p and decide I'm wrong you
can always convert to wheel steering later.
