Well, as a live aboard couple we'd take the SunDazer over an ice box! This go round, new boat and new wife, we've been mostly welded to the slip, but plan on setting sail this summer or fall. Last time had 300W of Solar and an Airmarine wind gen. This time have 400W of Solar (added a 1.3 CF Haier freezer) and Airmarine wind gen. Last time an Adler/Barber ice box conversion, this time Norcold. Oh, how I wish I'd have spent twice the boat dollars and went Adler/Barber again! That Norcold with swing compressor runs an awful lot to do the same job. But then it uses 25% less Amperage. Didn't find out until after the Norcold is about 2/3 the BTU's. Yes, Ice box was reduced from 9+ cu. ft. to 4.5 with added polyurethane insulation. As an aside, the ice box on our classic (read that old) Pearson Rhodes 41 had 1 1/2 in of white Styrofoam. 100 lbs of ice the first outing lasted about 14 hours. This opposed to our previous Morgan 302 with "factory" polyurethane that would go 5 to 6 days with 80 lbs of ice. Back to the SunDazer. I'm going to investigate more and see just how efficient it is. Living on Solar and Wind makes one watch such things :-) BTW, last cruise, old boat and old wife, spent 2 1/2 years mostly cruising or on the hook and never had to start the engine once to charge batteries. This with the fridge and watermaker, plus all the other electrical/electronic goodies. I would hate to think of having to go to the nearest civilization to find ice. We sometimes spent months anchored off an island several days sail from said nearest civilization. So, no hesitation - Fridge over Ice Box any ol' day!!! :-) Rick 'n' Cathy Morel S/V Valkyrie http://www.morelr.com/valkyrie ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Absolute safety is a concept promoted by those without the guts to live in the real world. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list [email protected] To adjust your membership settings over the web http://www.liveaboardnow.org/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardnow.org/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html
