My mother had her drivers license suspended.
Without notification.
The reason?

She failed to turn over her complete medical history to the Secretary of State.. 100% True.

There was a rumor that she had Diabetes and apparently there are new rules in the USA that require the states to conform to national standards for drivers licenses. Somewhere buried in there is requirement to ensure that people are medically fit. Maine decided not to take any chances and required anyone with a known or suspected medical condition to submit an affidavit that they take their meds properly, have a form filled out by their MD, and agree to allow the Secretary of state to have full access to their complete medical history. Anyone who failed to do so in a timely manor had their license suspended.

My mother lives in a rural area where the mail is... Well less than timely. She found out what was going on because a friend of hers was pulled over for something foolish and had her car IMPOUNDED and came close suffering VERY steep penalties for driving with a suspended license.

My views on situations like this are strong, I have issues with the current state of things in the USA. And although this is not the place to really hash out my political views or political action plan I wanted to share the story for an important reason.

REGARDLESS of right or wrong, regardless of our own political views those who live even slightly disconnected to perfect mail, don't have a land line, etc. need to be ever vigilant to the goings on in the world of regulations and politics.

Those who made the rules in the rural state of maine forgot that the mail doesn't always get there on time. I'm sure they did NOT think about anyone living aboard.

Burdensome surprises from our government are already here and I'm sure there are more on the way. The TWIC card is only one example, although not intended to be burdensome on the public it does require a certain "Connectedness" in order to learn about the new regulation.

Stay connected, don't be surprised, although many authorities are understanding, it only takes a bit of bad luck to be in a world of hurt.

USCG & DHS have announced that if you hold any USCG license (including a Coast Guard 6 pack or any Masters license) you have just 6 months left to get a new piece of plastic or your license will be invalidated.

Your license will be invalid after Sept 2008 if you do not get a TWIC Card (Transportation Worker Identity Card) from Homeland Security. Future boardings by the USCG will not only check your boat but also your ID.

So much for the  "land of the free"    Remember the  novel  1984?   Guess what?  Its no longer science fiction.
