With today's electronic regulators, sounds like it may be shorted to
force full field current which will boil battery.

I had to replace a bad regulator in our Ford truck. The replacement had a
positive temp coefficient.
As the under hood temperature climbs so does the voltage setpoint. Saw it
go to 15.6V on a hot day.
I complained to the supplier and was told they are supposed to do that.
. . . HUH???

They refused to replace it. I suspect I got a grey market chinese clone
product but can't prove it.
Box was printed FORD but that doesn't mean anything these days.
Since all of them are potted in epoxy I can't tell or even attempt a
repair.
I guess I can keep buying regulators until I find one that works
correctly.

Now with the old Ford that had an external regulator I could at least have
installed an after market unit that I trusted.
