So I don't know what kind of crack they are on at BoatUS but it must be some
good stuff. I went to their page and filled out a request for an insurance
quote. They mail me a quote that is just for liability only. I call up and
ask if they can do full coverage and they want over 2K a year for full
coverage on a 30k sailboat that is only sailed in the intracoastal waterway.

So fine I will take the risk and not have full coverage on my boat. I call
them up and say I want the liability only policy. They say "you haven't
sent in a recent copy of your survey with the boat hauled out." I tell them
that no one said I needed that and I can't believe that they would need that
for a liability only policy. They put me through to the underwriter who is
pretty rude and says they have to have it even for the liability only. So I
say "thank you very much, I am not going to do business with your company".

I now have a liability only policy from Progressive. It cost a little more
than what BoatUS wanted but no survey or other crap needed. Funny thing is
that the full coverage policy from Progressive would only be $1400 a year.
Still a lot of money.

Anyway some friends at work and I were speculating at what the condition of
the boat has to do with liability and decided that they must be worried that
if the boat sinks and there is a diver under the boat when it sinks they
might have to pay for the divers death or injury.

It's getting tougher and tougher to get insurance for anything these days.
