Ahoy All,
Several evenings ago a forty-something foot SeaRay pulled up about 50 yards away and dropped the hook. We get very few boats anchoring in Julington Creek estuary, and it was about sunset, so I dingied over to invite the people onboard over for cocktails on the poop deck. When I got alongside I shut down my outboard and hung onto a sanction. I told the skipper I was from the boat next door and wished to invite him and his crew over for cocktails. He replied angrily that he knew what boat I was on and would never do such a thing. His voice was dripping with hatred. Seems he was one of my nearest neighbors on the shore, about a two hundred yards to the north of us. When I asked him why he was so angry the first thing he said was that I paid no property taxes. When I asked he told me he paid $25K/year. I responded with "Wow, that's a lot, how much is your house worth?" He told me $1.5 million. He then complained that I was dumping sewerage into the river. I explained that I had a holding tank in which we keep the offending substance until we could pump it out, he said he didn't believe me, that he didn't believe I had a holding tank large enough do what I said. Finally he complained about me not moving once in a while. I was surprised by this one, but he went on and on about that, saying he would just like me move a hundred feet from time to time. I tried to explain that the creek was about the same depth as my boat's draft and that finding a place where I was actually floating was not easy. He just went on about moving once in a while finally telling me the conversation was over. I have decided to try to move the boat this weekend when the moon is full and we should have a high tide. I will have to survey around the boat and find another 8 foot spot, hopefully closer to the dinghy dock. I have also ordered an Air Head to install in the crew head. I will keep the Skipper, but have the Air Head too. I left his boat and went to investigate a sailboat anchored about a mile away. Met an interesting cruising couple of ten years underway on their way to Green Cove Springs marina to do a bottom job. We had a fine chat and the next evening they came over for dinner.
