A friend of mine recently noticed that there's absolutely nothing
stopping you from running a foghorn on your boat, while anchored, even
if there's no immediate risk of fog. If he's anchored near someone's
home and finds himself getting a courtesy visit to check his vessel's
safety equipment, he show the officers that not only does he have all
required safety equipment, but he also has this entirely optional piece
of equipment and, having been alerted that he's in an area where he
should pay heightened attention to safety, will be using it for the
remainder of his stay at anchor.

Of course, he also has a home ashore, and I hear that makes things a
little easier with the authorities.

Cheers,
Kris
