Perhaps you're aware: Some plastics don't like some caulks. IIRC pure silicone 
is benign to all plastics but requires a compression joint (it's not an 
adhesive itself and cannot be counted upon to "stick").

Norm's approach, leaving a gap at the bottom and eliminating all holes, seems 
to make the most sense; but don't I know any reason not to bed the top, as that 
should minimize water wicking into the top joint. Using a clear (or mostly 
clear) top might allow the dorade to double as a light tunnel.
