Ed,
Whom do you mean by "they"?
I have no idea how it happened, perhaps a virus or some problem at Earthlink.
I still can't open Earthlink Total Access, Their server tells me my ID and PW
don't match. I have been on line with live chat three times and even turned
over my machine to them for hours over the past few days and still no joy. But
the email works now and I don't use the Total Access program, I use Firefox, so
I will address it another day.
Personally I wouldn't bother with the Vineyard. Vineyard Haven is dry and
there are no places of interest there. We were there once and had to take a bus
to Edgartown. Edgartown is a tourist amusement town a short ferry ride from
the mainland so there are lots of day-trippers there. But try it if you must.
We did once.
We suggest, with your late-in-season arrival, you go straight on to Nantucket
instead. It's a wonderful walking town with real character. The Atlantic
House is the sailors bar. We have been there several times and always enjoyed
it. We anchored around the northeast corner of the mooring field. There is
plenty of room there.
Then go up around the tip of Cape Cod to Provincetown (navigate very carefully
around this area, there is lots of fog and there are shallows out of sight of
land) and spend a day or two there. Provincetown is a unique and colorful
town. We always have fun there. We bought our winter fur-lined caps at the War
Surplus Store there. Start at the Old Colony bar on the right just as you step
off the pier where the dinghy dock is located.
Then go to Gloucester for the Schooner Races over Labor Day weekend. We haul
out there. I wouldn't bother with Maine at this late date. The sweetest part
of Maine is mid-Maine, the Penobscot area, in my opinion and it is really too
late in the season. Gloucester is a great town. We spend months there and
enjoy every minute. When you get there I'll give you a briefing on the place.
Head south after Labor Day. Just south of the Cape Cod Canal is Onset, a fun
little local holiday town we love. Take care at the entrance, the current is
very strong, but once through the door it is a very safe harbor.
After Onset, head south directly to Cape May, up the Delaware, through the C&D,
(we did last trip) and do the Chesapeake until the end of October. Then head
south for the Winter.
