All,

I have never so far needed a gun to protect myself while cruising and am
somewhat ambivalent about the matter. I did have one when I lived out in the
country building my hull and had to take it out several times when trespassers
appeared. I never had to use it. But I can perfectly understand the feeling
of someone down below, usually with others who's safety he is responsible for,
hearing invaders on deck and knowing he is completely helpless to defend
himself and his family. I know of instances where firepower has stopped a
pirate attack dead; and I know of instances where having a gun aboard resulted
in some of the boats crew being killed.

I can easily see valid points on both sides of these discussions, due in large
part to the discussions themselves. I boils down to a decision (like what
anchor to trust your vessel to) that each Captain and his family must make for
themselves, but having an awareness of both sides of the issue is a must for an
informed decision.

Debate is healthy for us and everything related to boating is grist for the
mill. Whether it's navigation, engineering or general seamanship, recognition
of truth is a huge ingredient in the boating life. Looking at issues from
different viewpoints gives us a better understanding of those issues.

To those who would censor the List I have often noticed that a request to stop
a particular discussion comes right after the requester himself puts his own
two-cents worth in.

I have been on this list for many years and have seen many heated discussions
come and go, yet the list is healthy and is debatably the best source of expert
first-hand boating information anywhere.

Therefore, I am not in favor of stifling any discussion subject.

Besides, if you don't want to participate you can always opt out.

This entire thread about guns aboard boats or in your residence or hidden on
your person is getting into the ridiculous. I am being lambasted with all sorts
of reasons dating back from the American Civil war justifying the possession of
guns.

This entire thread started when we had one person report a problem with thieves
in the Venezuela area and all of a sudden we have to arm ourselves to repel
boarders. I don't even think that report was from personal experience but
rather some thing that was heard about.

Then we have another report from someone who is there who says there is no
problem with thieves boarding their vessels.

Let's put this to the list members, how many of you have needed a gun on your
boat for protection from human predators?

As for those who have been emailing me stats etc about this offlist I will not
be responding any further, either here or offlist.
