Actually, the facts are that two sailboats were preemptively attacked by
pirates off Yemen a couple of years ago. The pirates were in two motor
boats, armed with automatic weapons. They rammed the stern of one sail
boat firing as they approached.
The skipper of the second sail boat opened fire with a shotgun killing the
pirates firing upon his friends, and disabling others on the attacking
boat. Then he rammed and rolled over the second boat disabling them.
One armed sailor with a shotgun and his wits about him completely stopped
two armed pirate vessels, killing or disabling all the pirates and while
none of his party were injured.
While I am neither for nor against guns on board, we owe it to ourselved to
be aware of facts.
P:irates are typically lazy and cowardly, that's why they have become
criminals, accustomed to overwhelming unarmed and unprepared victims by
force of numbers and/or deciet. A fierce and coordinated defensive
response will often prevail.
