Hi Skip & others interested:

ANCHORING IN LONG ISLAND:
OYSTER BAY We will go to Oyster Bay. Besides It being home to Teddy
Roosevelt,
Hicksville (which I understand is a hamlet in Oyster Bay) is the
childhood
home of Billy Joel. Also near there is Levitown, which was America's
first
developed suburb after WWII.

PORT WASHINGTON We can also recommend Port Washington. They give
transients a free mooring ball the first two nights, but there is
also plenty of
room for anchoring in the bay too. Port Washington has good grocery
stores,
and a very good hardware store in the strip mall near one of the stores.
There is a commuter line into Port Washington as well to access NYC by
train. It is our stopping off place before going in via Hells Gate
and the East
River to round Manhattan to go to the 79th St Moorings... When you
go in
via East River make sure you time that passage very well as tides are
too
swift to ignore...

Wnen you eventually go down into NYC via the East River, you will pass
Riker's Island (the NYC prison) on the left...always referred to on
the TV show
Law and Order.

ANGEL LOUISE STILL NEAR NEWPORT
Sue and I continue to anchor in Narragansett Bay east of Jamestown near
Newport. We scootered into the Slice of Heaven bakery for sticky buns
and to the hardware store this morning. Yesterday we scootered all over
Newport, getting lots of smiles from other walkers. We took them all
over
including the cliff walk.

RECOMMENDATION FOR CRUISERS
I recommend the kick scooters we got to any boater who does not want
to carry a full size bike in the dinghy. We had used bikes a lot,
but got
tired of hauling them all around. We got KNOW PED scooters from
Amazon.com
and love them. You can scooter via a kick scooter with no more
effort than walking, but you move at the speed of a jogger or runner.
You glide effortlessly on level ground and fast gong down hill. They are
around $140 but only weigh in at 12 lbs and fold up into a small
carryable
bundle in a few seconds and can be carried into restaurants, shops or
anywhere you go. If its a steep hill we just fold it and carry with
ease.
When you go to the store just wear your backpack to carry groceries
home.
The company that makes them also makes motorized ones. We did not
want those, but about 1 out of 5 folks think we must have a motor for
as fast as we go. They have hand brakes on front and foot brake on rear.
The units have bigger wheels and a foot wide platform. We spent a half
day researching them and are glad we got them. We like em.

We will be moving eastward within the next few days and will likely
do the Connecticut River again, explore other ports, and then jump
to the Long Island Side by next week at the latest.
