Hi everyone,
We have Angel Louise floating this early morning on still waters
at Atlantic Highlands, NJ.
I wanted to say thanks again to liveaboard list member and friend
Steve Weinstein for a great evening w/ drinks and dinner Wednesday
night in his home port of Oyster Bay, NY. Sue and I both enjoyed
the great evening & friendship very much. We met him after
anchoring in O.B. just below the site of the former summer
White House of President Teddy Roosevelt.
Early Thursday we raised anchor at 4 am, and using radar
and our electronic track on the chart plotter - we made it out
of Oyster Bay onto the larger waters of Long Island Sound in
darkness by 5 am. It was a rare beauty to see the NYC skyline
twinkling in the distance on this 7th Anniversary of 911 in the
pre-dawn darkness.
We had a nice motor sail up LI Sound toward NYC, and hit the East River
with the current in our favor, operating on only the starboard engine
(due to the port engine alternator going haywire with wild
unregulated voltages on the way up Long Island Sound the prior day).
We made it through HellGate on the East River with about 8.7
knots showing on the GPS and were by the UN around 9:00 am.
We cruised through around Manhattan Island during the 9.11 memorial
ceremonies, and went up the Hudson to the 79th St Boat Basin.
Unfortunately it was full up so just before noon, abeam Grants
Tomb, we cruised south out of NYC and its hectic harbor, going
under the Verizano Narrows Bridge and across the bay to behind
Sandy Hook and truly beautiful Northern New Jersey. We love
Atlantic Highlands mooring field and free anchorage behind their
seawall. (I read there is a clothing optional beach on the outside
of nearby Sandy Hook, but I have not been there.)
With the extra 3+ hour excursion up the Hudson River to the
Upper West Side of NYC, we still got to our final destination
by 4:30 pm Thursday.... 12.5 hours cruising and motor sailing
on only the starboard engine.
We are staying at Atlantic Highlands a couple days working on Angel
Louise and also waiting for some favorable winds going down NJ's
Atlantic Coast. Next leg is to Cape May (with a possible stop in
Atlantic
City). Our goal is to reach Annapolis (7 Seas Cruising Assn has a
cruising seminar ($30 fee) on Sept 20th in Edgewater.
Sue and I wish everyone a great day.
