The vast bulk of the chatter on a VHF is of no significance to me and I find it
a great distraction, distracting me from maintaining a proper lookout and
accurately assessing the situation around me.

So while I might have the VHF on, it might be heavily squelched to weed out
distant stations, and the volume low so as not to be a constant distraction.

While I do make use of the VHF when needed to sort out a specific situation, I
do not let it deflect my visual attention to what is going on around me. I
feel much safer relying on staying aware of the vessels around me and what my
right-of-way relationship is with them.

Ummm, VHF is also a serious violation! Both are required to be on with good
reason! Have a friend who gets upset with me for not squelching everything LOL
a 'lil static is good for the soul every once in a while
