John, as I read your question, and what I understand about the alternator, if you wired the "ignition" terminal to the push button the only time the alternator would be energized would be when you had the button pushed, which would be just during starting. If it is wired to the switch it will be energized the entire time that the switch is on and the engine running as in most boats.
