Of the public services, I prefer GMAIL for the spam control. However, because I also other accounts without good spam control, I use a program called MAILWASHER (www.firetrust.com) that allows me to view the headers and or mail content without downloading it to my machine. From the Mailwasher interface I can delete the message, bounce it, or save it for downloading at a convenient time. I have no relationship with the company other than using this particular product for many years with complete satisfaction.
