Hey Phil, good to hear from you again. I guess you can add me to the Honda
admirer crowd. I recently designed a system for a 38 footer and the only
genset on board was a Honda 2000 (gas). The boat is a twin diesel power
cat and there isn't enough room to fit a genset on board. So we plunked it
aft in the coaming of the cockpit but facing outboad. Easy to do on a
new build custom hull in metal.
Somewhat more difficult on an existing boat.

Regarding the noise issue, out her at least there are rules governing
genset use ( any kind, an boat) in the marine parks. Any complaint will
be lodged against offenders and fines can be levied.

However, if proper etiquette is observed it should not be an
insurmountable problem. Some people attempt to use the 8 amp output from
the genset as the primary means to recharge and wonder why it takes so
long.

I still prefer the high amps ( 120 - 200 amps ) method of direct drive of
big alternator for larger bank charging. I am now testing a new concept.
A custom built 230V 4kW gneset driving a pair of Victron shore power
chargers. They pretty much max out the genset. Going 230V in the rotary
genset eliminates the I squared R losses at high amp DC so even the losses
inherent in the shore power chargers is still acceptable.
Next project is likely to be a Honda driven 200 Amp Balmar. Last one was a
yanmar diesel but the noise from that was not acceptable. The custom
muffler shop wanted more for a muffler than I paid for the engine.

Cheers
Arild
