'bella, You may be able to pull the hard drive from the dead laptop and insert it into another laptop to get your data from it if the HD itself is functional.
Jan and I have carried just one laptop and our two hard drives on trips. Whichever HD we insert takes total control so it seems like each of us has our own laptop yet we have to carry only one.
