A question about composting toilets. Given that the composting bacterial activity requires heat to be functional does a composting toilet in freezing temperatures require some sort of heating method to maintain the bacterial activity essential to decomposition. Placing a composter against the outer hull would effectively allow the exterior cold to get closer to the toilet and the dead air space between it and the hull. I know that a cottage located composting toilet did not function in winter colds and -20F temperatures. Although it was equipped with solar panels for ventilation fan and composting heater, it did not work from December to March. What if anything do the manufacturer recommend regarding how much heat to provide. I do know that when I lived aboard in Toronto I had 1/4" ice on the insides of my port holes and my storage cupboards had to be left open or else risk freezing the food content. Gives an entirely new meaning to 'chipped beef in a can' for a quick winter time meal. Arild who stil remembes chipping frozen soup out of a can. _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list [email protected] To adjust your membership settings over the web http://www.liveaboardnow.org/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardnow.org/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html
