We have anchored at the 79th Street Boat Basin in NYC many times.

We did try a mooring at first but it dragged. We tried the "big boat"
moorings south of the docks but was in collision with another moored vessel
(a multihull).

Since then we anchor up at the northern end of the mooring field or in a
open space in the outer row.

The depths were in the 20's. While there is a strong current on the
outgoing tide, we found, as is the case where there are strong currents,
the bottom was excellent holding.

The biggest problem was a lively motion to the boat due to the broad
expanse of river to the west and occasional wakes from large vessels such
as tour boats. We would only stay two or three days before moving on,
usually to Oyster Bay on Long Island.
