The best bet for the Bahamas is to buy an unlocked GSM phone,
available from many different sources:

Once you arrive go to the nearest Batelco office (look for the cell
tower), and purchase a SIM card for about $13 or so.   Typically they
will also install the card in your phone if you ask.  That gives you a
Bahamian phone number and minutes can be pre-purchased for a
reasonable price at the same time.  If you travel elsewhere out of the
country, just purchase a new SIM card for that area.
