James, I had good service with a full insurance-accepted survey from: Thomas J. Ferguson, Marine Surveyor/Consultant 677 Lake Avenue, Manchester, NH 03103 Office: (603) 669-0734 Cell: (978) 828-8889 Fax: (866) 211-3836
When my offer on Captiva was accepted by the previous owner I used Tom for my own piece of mind more than fulfilling a requirement from Boat/US requiring the survey prior to issuing the insurance. He may live in New Hampshire but he works Massachusetts and the NE coast from Maine down to Rhode Island. He came down to Marblehead, MA to do Captiva. To be brutally honest, Tom missed a few things which came back to bite me in the butt when I had the mechanics at the Oyster Bay Marine Center look her over prior to the first winter's layup, things like two motor mounts about to go t*t's up, the below deck autopilot mounting plate, frozen steering sheaves. But that stuff wouldn't have been caught unless we took the time to almost completely disassemble various systems which wouldn't normally be looked at. For example, with the steering, it had been a little "tight" on the sea trial but not what I would have suspected as a potential future problem. He did look at the cables which weren't really worn. Actually, on the sea trial, I made a comment that I actually liked the stiffer steering! I figure that was probably my fault also since I could always have paid for a specialized engine mechanic/surveyor. But over all, he did a thorough inspection and caught a few things which really didn't impact the sale. Captiva is a 1997 model and was a one-owner boat and had been reasonably well cared for.
