We went out late afternoon and started heading West. The wind died off of
Greenwich, and the famous LIS Nor'East'So'Wester filled in. We turned on
the engine and thought about going to the Sandpit but went back to our slip
instead. Not a great 4th of July.

Steve, we ended up in Huntington Sunday night and although we plugged in
(air conditioning!) when we got up yesterday and stuck our nose out into
Huntington Bay is was not only stupidly hot but 0-5 kts. The bottom line is
we bagged it and returned to Oyster Bay, put Captiva back on her mooring and
headed home to the city and our air-conditioned apartment.

On the way back I tried you on 16 a few times but by then we were pulling
into our mooring field.

PS - After I got your email I went to my VHF and realized, yes it's DSC
(Standard Horizon Matrix), yes, I've got an MMSI # (#338037815), yes it's
tied to the chartplotter so it displays Lat/Lon, and it has that red cover
over the DSC Distress button, but I realized I didn't have a clue how to
actually make a DSC call!

So I just got off the phone with Vertex and he's sending me the owners
manual so I guess I should be able to make DSC calls by this weekend!!! If
I figure it out, I'll give you a call to your number if we get out on the
water - at this point there doesn't look like a hell of a break in this
weather. For what it's worth, here in NYC, the temp is 101 with a heat
index of 105. I dread go out to walk the dog - but it's got to be
done........

Not sure when we'll be out. Perhaps tomorrow. My brother-in-law and
family are arriving tonight.

I scan 09, 13 & 16. Best way to hail me would be to use DSC. My MSSI is
338035302

The Gary Mull Rangers are great boats. Fast for their sized and age.

Looks like we've got a "starting" plan at the moment - apparently the
Admiral has informed me that we're going 'backwards' tomorrow morning. A
good friend of ours invited us to their house in Manhassett for a bbq
Saturday night so it looks like we'll sail over to Port Washington tomorrow
and drop the hook or pick up a mooring and get picked up and returned after
dinner. Then Sunday we'll probably start heading east and depending on how
much of a lift we'll get from the outgoing tide we'll make for Port Jeff or
possibly even further on the Conn side - maybe Charles Island or if we get
some really nice SOG between the current and whatever wind we might try for
Duck Island....

Is there a specific VHF channel you listen on or just monitor 16?

Steve

By the way, I'm fascinated by those Rangers. I know they're a Gary Mull
design but they look almost identical to the late 70's/early '80s Hunter 33s
that John Cherubini designed. If you remember, we used to have an '81 H33.

We're hoping to get out this weekend. Not sure how it will go. Witchcraft
was splashed last week and I'm still cleaning up and commissioning. We're
in Stamford Harbor.

Now that we all seem to back on board (bad pun?) , are any NY, CT, or RI
sailors going to be out and about on the Sound this weekend and next week?

We're planning on heading out Saturday - heading East (probably Port Jeff on
Sat and then who knows....). Our only 'limitation' is we have to be back in
Oyster Bay by the morning or mid-day of Wednesday, the 7th.
