While it is a good idea to keep track of hurricanes, I'd like to remind
everyone to avoid staring at those FULL-SCREEN images in BRIGHT,
THREATENING COLORS that cover HALF OF THE ATLANTIC. That stuff could
give you a heart attack, or cause you to break out in insurance
policies.

After spending a number of years in the "Hurricane Alley" in the
Caribbean, and having lived in the general target zone of the East Coast
since then, my take is that all those projections by NHC are essentially
nearly-random guesses until the 'cane gets within ~48 hours of a given
area. Until then - sure, keep track of it, but don't assume that those
pretty maps mean anything beyond "there's a hurricane out there."

Not to fault NOAA/NHC - they're doing the best they can, I'm sure - but
they *can't afford* to "under-warn" people. What that mandate means is
that their mission is to scare the hell out of everyone within thousands
of miles of any event they track. Unless it's taken with that
understanding and a large grain of salt besides, those images are
nothing more than highly-entertaining horror films. It's important not
mistake them for reality.
