I once had a flat tire on a horse trailer and pulled into a gas
station and they sold me a different size tire than the other tire on
that side. They told me there was a low spot in the concrete there. I
felt so stupid when I got home. At least the tire worked to get me to
where I was going.

I had my first instance of being a target when we had a 1964 VW Bus
(in 1965) and Bob found that 3 of the 4 back brake cylinders were
leaking. He told me to take the car to the dealership in the next
town and have it fixed. So I packed up the girls (age about 2 and 4)
and drove over there.

First they tried to tell me that the wheel cylinders could not be
leaking. Then they said Bob had invalidated the warranty by taking
the wheels off to look and see what the problem was. So I said, Well
I'm not driving the car until it is fixed. We will just wait here
until you do it." And sat down in the waiting room with the two
children and made myself at home. It was done pretty quickly after
that. The German mechanic called Bob at home and butter wouldn't melt
in his mouth (I was on the other line). But when Bob asked if they
had checked the front brakes, his immediate answer was - the brake
cylinders on those cars never leak.

My last job before I retired was as an occupational health inspector
for OSHA. I had a trainee and he said he could see the management
(men) thinking that I would be a pushover, and then the shock on their
faces when they found that I was not.
