Something that came up for me today - a few days ago, we were talking
about bilge pumps, and the general take (and I agree with it) is that
Rule pumps are, as a rule :), crap. However, there are two exceptions
that I have lots of experience with:
1) Their 500gph 12v pump. Doesn't seem like anything unusual or
different, but... My 15HP Yamaha outboard has a generator built into it
- nothing special, just enough to run a light and maybe a little bilge
pump. The problem is that at idle it only puts out about 3.5V - although
it goes to 18V or so at max throttle. Turns out that this kills just
about any small bilge pump dead in a matter of a few days to a week (and
I've tried a large variety of them.) The only one that survives this
regime is the Rule 500; I usually get about 2-3 years out of one. I've
had this outboard since 1997, and the results have been consistent.
Yeah, it's a specialty application - but nice to know that there's
something for it.
2) I've been using their 2000gph pumps in my main and aft bilges; as I
recall, I put them in after struggling with the Jabsco that used to
service that aft bilge, and sending it to the devil in a fit of
frustration. That would have been around 2003 or so. Since then,
they've done a huge amount of work - I had a major leak in my boat at
one point. In addition, rain water used to get into the aft bilge via a
very tricky route (I'm still fixing that one), so it's been used a lot.
Unfortunately, I tend to get distracted by things and leave these pumps
running; in fact, during at least one long passage, I'd left it running
dry for over a day (couldn't hear it over the engine.) They took it and
kept on working, and are working still.
So, bottom of the line and top of the line - but not the middle. Not an
unusual sort of thing, that.
