There used to be a 6" piece of that stuff between the manifold flange
and the hard pipe; I spent quite a while looking for it when I first had
a problem with the exhaust system. A 3' piece of it in stainless would
solve that problem permanently.

Searching for it now (a number of years later, with my Google-fu much
improved), I see that these are called "stainless steel bellows". Here's
exactly what I used to have:

The kind of thing you're talking about, though, doesn't seem to be quite
as widely available. There are several manufacturers who'd be happy to
build one... I'd love to find a local place here around Norfolk that
could do that for me; I'm trying to get moving south before winter kicks
off. But it sure would be nice to solve this once and for all.
