Of course Norm has good advice and also experience and tools aboard.

I am often too conservative and follow the rule that is the first rule of
the Hippocratic Oath Dr's used to follow:
FIRST, DO NO HARM.

I do not want my motto to be READY, FIRE, AIM.

I have never had the problem but did not think I would gamble an
engine if I screwed up the engine problem diagnosis or cure.

I worry about running prematurely without fixing the problem.

One of the local folks here thought he had patched up his engine
sufficiently to get to Jacksonville from Brunswick for additional
engine work. After temporary repairs he decided to see if he could
run the engine for an hour to ensure it was OK and would get to
Jacksonville. It ran 15 minutes till it seized and threw a rod.
It cost him 5 figures eventually.

The good news was he had a lot of spare parts cause it did
not damage the starter, alternater, etc. etc.

Personally, I do all my engine repairs at anchor and spend the dock rent money
on spare parts and tools.

From my own experience, changing or overhauling a raw water pump does not
require much work, certainly not a dock, if I have the parts and tools on
hand. I have always anchored out and dinghied in to get what I needed.

Personally I'd get it to a dock where I would do any work.
