Melbourne is a bad place. > (2) an electrical short & fire scare in the mid-Chesapeake Bay north > of Norfolk, VA Norm - Let that be a lesson to you too. I had an electrical fire years ago under the main berth. (I could actually blame one step toward that fire on a cat.) It is scary. The nearest smoke alarm (at the head of the main berth) did go off but on deck nobody heard it. It was only when a guest went below to get some tea that we became aware of the fire. It was caused by a cat moving a live 12 vdc wire so that it touched ground to make a hot wire that ignited styrofoam insulation. It produced a low, smoky, fire that was easily put out by a nearby powder fire extinguisher. I now have a smoke alarm in each space (they all have bright white lights on them so one can tell what device is screaming) along with a fire extinguisher nearby. > (3) a 3:15 am grounding rounding Sandy Hook, NJ; Norm - I also had a close call off this point rounding it at night. The chart is misleading. When rounding this point stay in the marked big ship channel. We did anchor there to await the tide in the East River but don't trust the chart. It is very steep too and comes from deep to shoaling quickly. > (4) a light grazing by the diminishing Hurricane Earl as it left Cape Cod, Ma. > > We are grateful for the kindness of our friends all year. We could not > cruise as we have without the kind help and kind words of everyone. > Amen Jan and I are also grateful for the kindnesses we have received from Friends, Family, Neighbors, and the List (and some great good luck - we were very nearly T-boned yesterday when a SUV failed to stop for a red light. Jan would likely be in a hospital today with a smashed hip if the SUV had skidded to a stop three feet closer.) I am especially grateful to Sam and Vern Densler for the Livaboard List - my extended family - and all the support and sage advice I have received from you all. Happy Holidays and Following Seas.... Norm and Jan and the Kitties (Mimsey, Julington, and Penny) Norm S/V Bandersnatch Lying Julington Creek FL N30 07.68 W081 38.47 PS - David, Jan's son who smashed his foot into three pieces while on his Harley (since sold), is progressing well. However, the jury is still out as to whether or not he will keep his foot. He and Jan both send their thanks for the well-wishes of the List members. _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list [email protected] To adjust your membership settings over the web http://liveaboardonline.com/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [email protected] To unsubscribe send an email to [email protected] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardonline.com/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html
