Being not nearly as strong as Big Ben, my approach is "nothing I can tear
off by standing on it". as when struggling to deal with some other
approaching disaster.

My seacocks are the W-C flanged base tapered bronze seacocks (equipped with
ss grease fittings in place of their drain plugs) and are bolted through
their flanges to the hull with bronze carriage bolts.

The sea-chest idea Ben described is wonderful.  I have even seen such a
device placed over the prop on a motor boat to facilitate removing a fouled
line from the propeller.
