I fully agree, the problem with neon (besides life expectancy) is that it is either on or off. With an LED you can see if you got full voltage or limited voltage by the brightness. Figure out your series limiting resistor by the maximum voltage you would ever see. I like those new blue LEDs, maybe my age is showing...
