Back in 1990 at Trimble I got a call from a guy at some university who
wanted to verify that our 10X model Loran C/GPS receiver could accept
waypoints over it's I/O ports, and whether there was any way to send a Route
that way too.
I assured him that our unit would accept both waypoints and routes that way
(so we could download a customer's data, perform a master reset or even swap
out boards and return the repaired unit with all data restored).
Then he asked if there was a way to select a route for navigation via the
same I/O port. I replied "No, why do you ask?".
"Because we are trying to build a method of remote navigation of out vessel
without the intervention of "local humans".
After a few more questions I told him how to do the required actions with
the provision that he call me back with a report when he had tried it out.

I got the call in the fall. It had worked just fine until there had been a
nearby lightening strike at which time the unit had to be reset by a
crewmember and a route input and selected again...

Email me off list if you want more details...
