Rather than choosing which driver to use, why not continue the mandate
of education and provide documentation, kernel modules ala slackware,
the capacity to load and unload them, and pci-utilities to do some
forensics when using obscure chipsets?

This might be more complicated at first, but it would mean that people
who own a network card with a plain old Realtek 8139 chipset don't
have to worry about the card not properly being detected.
