It's a SiS chipset. The machine is actually an old IBM Aptiva. Perhaps it's just too old to work with 2.6? So unless there is some little thing that anyone can think of, I suppose i'll have to invest in some new hardware :).

it could be:
 - the ram (common error, try memtest)
 - chipset (i think this IS the problem)
 - ide-cables (yes, could be possible)
 - your cd-rom drive
 - your hardware isn't supported by the livecd's kernel

kernel 2.6: yes, they ARE removing old drivers from the current kernel-series, but that only concerns _very_ old stuff. i think pentium 1 and above should work fine.
