Or how about a well thought out, firm (yet polite), occasion-specific webpage to cover each of: 1) obviously in over their heads 2) obviously giving advice without knowing what they're talking about 3) obviously haven't read the pre-reqs or the book closely 4) any other situation that occurs frequently Then, put the link to the appropriate webpage, and nothing else, into your reply to the offender. Any generic tips or suggestions could be placed into those web pages, with nothing specific being needed. Many will take such info to heart, many will whine. The whiners get ignored, those who take it to heart take a giant leap forward in open source community netiquette as well as starting down a path of self-sufficiency and greater learning.
