1) The symbol is indeed present in libc.so.6, with the correct version
2) The failed command is the _first_ linking command in the log file, so I
assumed that linking doesn't work, except for really simple cases like those
that ./configure does
3) Linking certainly works for other packages, and the obvious difference is
that they don't use --as-needed
4) The --as-needed flag is new and not well-tested, so it is natural to try to
exclude it from the equation
Of course, this means that my conclusion is not a firm conclusion, but an
"educated guess".
