First,  I think you should be asking these questions on one of these lists:

[email protected]

.....and not the  Developement List.  Have you searched the archives?
When you first boot the livecd , you are user: root and what your seeing is a system environment that is running only in memory and gets what it needs from the cd. You are at; ~ (strange environment eh?)
 And your not even touching the hard drive until you , as Jeremy said
make a new mount point ( /mnt/? )
and then mount a /dev/???? which would be the partition of your hard drive that you wish to build on.
Does that make any sense?
