Sorry, I can't believe this. They are known to rebuild everything themselves, so they must have development packages. The canonical way to install pre-requisites on Debian-based systems is: aptitude install build-essential m4 bison flex According to http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz, all packages are present in the "main" repository.
