r1952 and older hardware

Livecd not found
hdc: drivenot ready for command
hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown

These are exactly the same errors I get with all lfs livecd versions.
the cd drive:
ATAPI 24X CD-ROM 128kb Cache, DMA

even with a rootdelay=30, the same error messages.
it boots fine on an amd athlon 2200+ and amd AM2 3800+ system.
it's only the old pentium mmx @ 266MHz laptop it fails on.
