Hi

I have to admit that I've not had any luck in installing yasr but intend
putting it on my iso. I've directed some questions to the speakup list so will
ammend accordingly but there's a few things someone here can help me with.

I put a script in /etc/rc.d/init.d/software_speakup which isn't being read at
boot. I put a link in rc2.d S99software_speakup. In this script I call,
speech-dispatcher, echo sftsyn to speakup's proc entries, then call speechd-up.
I then play a cw "can" through the PC speaker, so I know if the script has
been run.

With sighted support I found that:

All alsa controls were muted. So my script may have been run. What would be
the clean way of fixing this? It might be a problem if someone doesn't have a
supported soundcard, but I'm hoping that will just complain and continue.

The espeak command worked as expected when text was typed on the console.

The speed-say -t male1 command complained and I was confused about these
settings. The speakup list will help on this matter.

The speech-dispatcher package was checked out of it's cvs repository and espeak
is the 1.28 tar against the port-audio18.

BTW: I couldn't find the brltty tar so didn't know whether I should reinstall
to work with speech-dispatcher.

Any suggestions of a clean way to start software speech?

Regards

Gena

On the speakup list, it is advised to use YASR instead of speakup - does
it work for you? If it does, I will be glad to see known-working
instructions.

Could you please post the output of "find /lib/modules" on your custom CD?
