That might work for now... but I can definitely imagine that future updates are 
going to cause additional dependency conflicts when they can't find the 
versions of the excluded packages they expect to be there.

With the way I'm doing it, I get the updates before the broken package.  The 
way you are doing it, you are getting the initial distro release versions.  I 
know there have been several cycles of updates to NetworkManager and udev too.  
Your way does save a lot of disk space though compared to my way... although I 
am using symlinks.
