Thanks for all the tips/help!

I found what was causing this problem (for me).   Apparently, I ran the 
build script I use for the webtutorials and example programs as root and 
that created a .rpmmacros file in /root.    When I removed that file, 
the uname issue and the "can't create file in ... INSTALL .. 
rpm-tmp.nnnn" message also went away and I can create liveCD's again.

I apologize for taking up everyone's time with this, but I appreciate 
the tips which pointed me down the path to find the .rpmmacros mistake I 
made.
