So the good news is that once I got home, the auto-keystone has started to work just fine. I have the feeling that it needs quite a bright wall, and dark conditions so that it can detect the contrast and edges of the screen properly.

The not so great news is that in 30 minutes of trying the projector connected to the Internet, mainly on Youtube, my inbox filled up with 14 warnings from my firewall that the projector has been trying to contact IP addresses based in data centres around the world - including some Google SMTP servers - on port 25. I can't think of any good reason why an Android device should be doing this - so it is a pretty big red flag. If anyone fancies doing a deeper investigation, I can bring it with me next time.
