It was extremely popular 20 to 25 years ago.

When social media got going, it got started with blogs rather than
platforms like Facebook.

The whole thing started as "nerds making websites" -> Geo Cities -> MySpace
/ Blogger / etc etc - > Facebook etc

RSS was the way you sort of federated content by a lot of different
authors. There were tools like Google Reader that would aggregate RSS feeds
and give you a sort of feel like you get when you hit reddit or hackernews
today. A list of articles by different authors.

It seems to be coming back around again as people are sort of fed-up with
these corporate platforms and want to discover the web on their own terms.
