I've now found a fix to stop my computer freezing when running Ledger Wallet app, which is to switch to Xorg from Wayland. Given that future versions of Ubuntu seem set to phase out Xorg (25.10 has already dropped support for Xorg), I posted the following comment to Ubuntu Discourse:
I am currently having the experience of Ledger Wallet (previously known as Ledger Live) freezing my dual core CPU computer in Wayland. When I switch to Xorg, Ledger Wallet doesn’t freeze. I’ve been advised that Ledger Wallet is an Electron app and therefore intensive on system resources. Ledger Wallet also doesn’t freeze in Wayland on my old but quad-core CPU laptop. So I am wondering if there is an issue which Ubuntu developers should address to do with running intensive apps in Wayland on older computers? Obviously, there are loads of workarounds available, one of which is to simply stick with 24.04 LTS for the remaining lifetime of my 2012 machine. But nonetheless I felt the need to keep the Ubuntu developers on their toes. If anyone has any insight to add, please do!
