I've been on the DWARF GPU working group since it started meeting, and at AMD we have a working implementation of much of DWARF6 that enables debugging (some) optimized code on AMDGPUs today. It is a more radical departure from the current approach, which is why it is not (yet) upstream. In the process of trying to get it to a state where it can replace the current upstream approach I ended up on a bit of a tangent, and I'm exploring an approach that borrows from GCC's design. I don't quite have a fully-baked design to pick apart yet, but I hope to relatively soon.
