---------- Inici SmartScreenSpamFilterAB.doc ---------- How the Microsoft SmartScreen Technology Spam Filter Works The spam filter SmartScreen Technology, developed by Microsoft Research, is based on patented machine learning technology in which the spam filters employed in Microsoft products such as the Office Outlook 2003 Junk E-Mail Filter can learn the definitions that distinguish good mail from spam. After inspecting an incoming message, the filter can then decide whether the message is likely to be spam based on the probability determined by the learning process. To educate the filter, hundreds of thousands of Hotmail users have agreed to participate in the Feedback Loop program. These users classify an e-mail message sent to them via Hotmail each day as either spam or good mail. The messages are then sent back to Microsoft, where the SmartScreen machine learning technology investigates each message, and teaches the filter what types of characteristics or indicators make the message likely to be spam or good mail. To date, more than 5 million e-mail messages have been used to define the criteria used by the filter. With such massive training on what markers to look for in a message, SmartScreen is able to make a very accurate assessment of the probability that an incoming e-mail message is spam. SmartScreen Technology is trained on a statistically sound sample of e-mail that includes good e-mail in addition to spam. The fact that SmartScreen has learned the markers for both types of mail increases the overall accuracy and reduces the likelihood of false positives. This accuracy is one of the key advantages of Microsofts advanced technology and filters. Microsofts spam fighting community submits millions of good and spam e-mail messages to Microsoft for processing. The filter is then trained to understand the differences between and markers associated with good e-mail and spam. SmartScreen is used in Microsoft mail products such as Office Outlook 2003 Junk E-Mail Filter to inspect messages for characteristics of spam or good e-mail and filter accordingly. When a Microsoft mail product receives an e-mail message, the application first obtains the properties of the message and determines if the content should be scanned by the filter. If the message contains an address or domain on the Safe Sender, Safe Recipient or Blocked Sender lists, the appropriate rule is applied and SmartScreen is bypassed. However, if the message is not on any of the lists, the message is submitted for filtering. As the message is processed by the filter, the different characteristics (typically contained within the message text) are noted and the probability that each characteristic is spam (or good e-mail) is used to generate an overall rating. Based on the setting in the product that uses SmartScreen, the message, if determined to be spam, will automatically be sent to the designated spam folder. ######### Microsoft, Outlook and Hotmail are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Microsoft Corp. in the United States and/or other countries.
