This is removed in the last PR in the stack, the one that separates this class
into two. I needed this hack because otherwise there is no way to reset the
directive id once it's been set (it's stored in the base class).
This could have been avoided, but I'd have to merge this and the last PRs into
one. Since that would be a large change I kept them separate.
