Re-reading your most recent comment, this is a revert of the revert, so 
essentially you are trying to back-port the original change? If so, we do not 
normally accept backports of features to the release branch, only fixes for 
bugs and regressions.

Is this fixing a bug or a regression that is present on the release branch?
